Why We Are a Self-Pay Practice

Because People Are More Than Diagnoses

Culturally Affirming Trauma Informed LGBTQ Affirming Neurodivergent Affirming Body Positive Community Oriented Client Focused

When we opened Arise Wellness GNV, we spent a lot of time thinking about the kind of practice we wanted to build.

  • We knew we wanted therapy to feel human.
  • We wanted our clinicians to have the freedom to show up authentically.
  • We wanted our clients to feel seen as whole people rather than collections of symptoms.
  • We wanted therapy to be guided by relationships, not reimbursement requirements.

Ultimately, we chose to operate as a self-pay practice because it aligns with the values that brought Arise to life in the first place. Not because insurance is bad. Not because self-pay is right for everyone. But because it allows us to provide care in a way that feels authentic to who we are and what we believe healing requires.

We Believe You Are More Than a Billing Code

Life can be hard without there being something “wrong” with you.

Maybe you’re grieving the loss of someone you love. Maybe you’re struggling in your relationships. Maybe you’re navigating burnout, parenting, a major life transition, or trying to make sense of experiences that have shaped who you are.

Many people come to therapy not because they have a disorder, but because they want support, understanding, healing, or growth. Insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis to cover therapy services. While diagnoses can sometimes be helpful, they are only one small part of a person’s story.

At Arise, we don’t believe that everyone seeking support should have to fit into a diagnostic box. We believe your experiences matter simply because they matter to you.

We Value Privacy

Mental health care is deeply personal. Many of our clients choose self-pay because they appreciate having greater control over their personal health information.

When insurance is used, therapists are often required to submit diagnoses, treatment plans, progress updates, and other documentation to justify continued care.

For some people, this is a worthwhile tradeoff.

For others, especially professionals, healthcare providers, business owners, educators, community leaders, and individuals who highly value confidentiality, having an additional layer of privacy is important.

Self-pay allows the therapeutic relationship to remain between you and your therapist.

We Believe Healing Doesn’t Follow a Timeline

Growth rarely happens in a straight line. Some seasons of therapy require deeper work. Others require maintenance, reflection, or support through a difficult chapter of life.

Insurance companies often determine what qualifies as medically necessary treatment and may place limitations on coverage.

At Arise, we want treatment decisions to be based on what is clinically appropriate and meaningful for you, not what fits within a reimbursement structure.

We trust that healing looks different for different people.

We Want Therapy to Feel Human

One of the things we hear most often from clients is that Arise feels different.

  • Maybe it’s because our offices feel more like living rooms than clinics.
  • Maybe it’s because our therapists show up as real people.
  • Maybe it’s because we genuinely enjoy the work we do and the people we get to do it with.

The truth is that meaningful therapy happens through connection.

Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes. Long before any intervention, technique, or worksheet can make a difference, people need to feel safe enough to be themselves.

We want our clinicians spending their time building those relationships, not spending hours navigating insurance requirements.

We Built Arise Around Community

Arise was born from the belief that both clients and clinicians deserve better.

Therapy is incredibly purposeful work, but it can also become transactional when productivity and reimbursement become the primary focus.

We wanted to create something different.

  • A place where clinicians are supported.
  • A place where clients are cared for.
  • A place where authenticity matters.
  • A place where relationships come first.

Being self-pay allows us to build a practice that reflects those values.

What If I Need More Affordable Options?

We recognize that self-pay therapy is not accessible for everyone, and we believe everyone deserves access to quality mental health care.

We know that investing in therapy is not possible for everyone. That’s one of the reasons we offer reduced-rate services through our graduate intern program. Our interns are carefully selected, closely supervised, and deeply committed to the work, allowing us to provide more affordable options while staying true to our mission of making meaningful mental health care accessible to our community.

Whenever possible, we also work hard to connect individuals with resources that may better fit their financial circumstances, including community agencies, training clinics, and other local options.

Our goal has never been to convince everyone that Arise is the right fit.

Our goal is to help people find the care they need, whether that care happens here or elsewhere.

Is Self-Pay Therapy Right for Me?

Self-pay therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Value privacy and confidentiality
  • Want flexibility in your treatment
  • Prefer care that focuses on your whole story rather than a diagnosis alone
  • Are looking for a therapist who feels like the right fit, regardless of insurance networks
  • Want a more personalized therapeutic experience
  • View therapy as an investment in your wellbeing, relationships, and personal growth

You Deserve Care That Honors Your Humanity

At Arise, we believe therapy should be a place where you can show up exactly as you are.

Not as a diagnosis.

Not as a problem to be fixed.

Not as a collection of symptoms.

As a whole person.

Your experiences matter. Your story matters. Your relationships matter.

And if you’re looking for a place where those things are at the center of the work, we’d be honored to walk alongside you.

Frequently Asked Questions

We choose to operate as a self-pay practice because it allows us to prioritize privacy, flexibility, and individualized care. Our goal is to focus on what is most helpful for you rather than what is required by an insurance company.

Many clients find that self-pay therapy offers greater privacy, more flexibility in treatment, and the ability to choose a therapist based on fit rather than insurance networks. Ultimately, the value of therapy comes from the quality of the relationship and the meaningful changes it helps create in your life.

Not necessarily. Many people seek therapy for personal growth, relationship concerns, grief, life transitions, burnout, or self-exploration. We believe your experiences deserve attention whether they fit neatly into a diagnostic category or not.

Many clients appreciate the additional layer of privacy that comes with self-pay therapy. When insurance is used, therapists are often required to share diagnoses and treatment information to obtain reimbursement. With self-pay therapy, the therapeutic relationship remains primarily between you and your clinician.

Depending on your insurance plan, you may be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement. We can provide a superbill that you may submit directly to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. We encourage clients to contact their insurance provider to learn more about their out-of-network benefits.

Yes. We are committed to increasing access to quality mental health care whenever possible. Arise offers reduced-rate therapy services through our graduate intern program. Our interns are carefully selected, closely supervised, and supported by experienced clinicians, allowing us to provide high-quality care at a lower cost for members of our community.

Self-pay therapy may be a good fit if you value privacy, flexibility, personalized care, and the freedom to choose a therapist based on connection rather than insurance networks. If you’re looking for a therapy experience that focuses on your whole story, not just symptoms or diagnoses, self-pay therapy may be worth exploring.

We believe healing happens through relationships. At Arise, you’ll find real people who care deeply about the work they do and the people they serve. We strive to create a space that feels warm, authentic, and free of judgment. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, we work to understand the whole person sitting across from us and support them in living a more connected, meaningful, and authentic life.
